Dieting Without Breakfast Can Cause Your Weight Loss to Stall Out,
not to mention causing your day to stall out! When dieting, it's even more important to have a healthy breakfast. Any time you eat, your metabolism speeds up to begin processing the food into energy. Failing to eat breakfast puts the body into starvation mode, slowing down the metabolism, thereby burning fewer calories, and causing your body to store fat, instead of releasing it as energy.
This is not the way to kick off your day or your weight loss program. Have something healthy, like oatmeal, whole grain cereal, even a whole wheat bagel and some marmalade. This will get your body warmed up and it will keep you from having hunger pangs for the first few hours of your day.
Most of us who are trying to lose weight figure that skipping a meal is the easist way to cut calories. But meal skipping is never a good idea, for the reasons mentioned above, and breakfast is the most essential meal of the day for the same reasons.
Remember, fast food does not count as a meal. If you're trying to lose weight, you must stop eating fast food completely.
Sound extreme? It is. Especially breakfast, as the fare at the burger joints for breakfast is loaded with fat and calories. Also, we're trying to focus on eating whole, homemade, healthy foods for complete physical health. Make sure you have things that you enjoy eating for breakfast on hand, and leave yourself enough time to prepare and eat it at the beginning of your day. This is the right way to start your day!
Other suggestions for healthy breakfasts:
Wheat toast and soft boiled eggs
Whole grain English Muffin, toasted, with honey
Low-fat yogurt with fruit
There are also some great breakfast shakes out, and we'll do a page on them real soon to help you get started.
Try to stay away from high fat meats and sausage, and if you're having eggs, make sure you don't fry them in high fat grease.
One last thing about breakfast- I always like to keep a bottle of all-natural real fruit juice on hand. Read the label to insure that you're actually getting juice that comes from fruit with no fructose. The label should show the fruit first, as in pomegranate juice from pomegranates, or from concentrate if no straight juice is available. Also, stay away from apple juice as a first or second ingredient, as it tends to have too much added sugar, and has far less of the anti-oxidants and vitamins found in pomegranate, cherry, and other such juices. You'll be amazed how much better you feel if you drink these real fruit juices regularly, and you may find your body responding like you were younger!
UPDATE! I just finished reading a report from a major medical journal saying that 8 oz. of real fruit juice like we're talking about can significantly reduce heart disease, and slow the effects of age!
Breakfast and dieting are closely related, and you'll find your day goes so much smoother and is more effective when you start the day with a good meal that jump starts your metabolism.
So, eat a healthy breakfast, have a glass of real fruit juice, and insure a Phenomenal Day!
