Healthy Eating Has Become a National Obsession,
as we all try to figure out what constitutes "healthy food" and healthy eating.
The reality is that we just don't know.
I recently moved to Texas from my home in Wisconsin, and went to the local grocery store to do my semi-weekly shopping. I read constantly to keep up to date on which fad diets and fad foods have recently been debunked or fallen out of favor, and consider myself well-versed in healthy food and it's inherent terminology. I've even been researching the raw food diet for this web site, and learning much about what foods are best for this old school way of eating. Anyway, I spent so long reading all of the labels on the orange juice containers that someone stole my not-quite half-full cart of fruits and vegetables!
On top of being frustrated at not finding the OJ that I wanted, now I had to go back and start over on the veggies and fruit! (Yes, I was laughing, too, after a few minutes!) It was then that I became aware of how hard many of us are working to eat healthy. Whether it's because we're overweight, are on a diabetes diet, or just trying to spice up our food and recipes to help us live healthier, we're spending way too much time thinking about our food supply.
Bear with me, now, because I'm about to spill the beans on the whole system we've been using to measure our nutrition!
Counting Vitamins, Minerals, and Anti-oxidants is a Waste of Time and Energy!
Does that shock you? Well, don't feel bad, it shocked me, too.
Here is where this comes from. I have just returned from Las Vegas at the Spree Convention for Entrepeneurs, where I picked up a book to read on the plane on my way home. The title is, "In Defense of Food" written by Michael Pollan.
It's an excellent read, and the most enlightening book on our current food, vitamin, mineral, anti-oxidant, and supply chain that I've ever read. I urge anyone who cares about their own or their families' health to read it. I became very angry at the FDA, the government, the manufacturers of our food supply, and just about everyone else who is supposed to be monitoring our nations' health, and who have led us into this low-fat, vitamins added abyss that we are in.
I don't want to go into full detail regarding the book, because I could not do it justice in this short space. Suffice it to say that if you really want to start eating healthy, you need to start shopping at your local farmers market, planting as much of your own vegetables and fruit as you can, and staying away from fast food restaurants. Healthy food, in its truest sense, does not come from the supermarket. Eating healthy is only possible if you're getting the ingredients from a local source, cooking from scratch, and leaving processed foods behind.
The point of Pollan's book, in my opinion, is that the people who are telling us what is good for us, that is, which vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, etc., are most beneficial to our health, really have no idea! They simply do not know how all of these things work together, or if they're missing some key ingredient that we don't even know about yet. Noone as yet, and perhaps noone ever will, truly understands why some foods affect some people one way and others in a completely opposite way. This much we do know- the manufactured foods that are supposedly designed for our health are having the opposite effect on most of us.
As a nation, we are definitely not eating healthy.
When you eat healthy you improve your acid-base balance. This is absolutely crucial to your health, because disease states flourish in an acidic environment, and your body will never function optimally if your acid-base balance is off. If the Scientists can't tell us How to Eat Healthy,
how are we supposed to figure it out? Pollan's reply is so simple it's scary. It is in fact one of the reasons we started building this web site: Go back to the basics. Check out our

and you'll get the idea. And that was before I read this book, which has fortified my zeal for healthy eating, while at the same time revolutionizing my methodology, based on his assessment of our nations food supply.
Our ancestors didn't have all the health problems we have, partially because they didn't think about eating healthy. They grew, raised, prepared and ate what their parents taught them to, and they were much healthier for it. As Pollan explains, that has all changed in the last couple of generations here in the states.
If you've always wondered why you're overweight, even when you cut your portion size, drink more water, eat what you previously thought were healthy foods, and stayed away from fast food places, this book will make you wonder no more. The so-called healthy food we're buying at the grocery store is no more healthy, and maybe less so, than the ice cream at the ice cream shop! All of the tinkering that the scientists, nutritionists and manufacturers have done has left us devoid of the nutrients that kept our great-grandparents healthy and happy.

In the Reason for Our Lack of Health, We find the Cure.....
So, if the cause of our obesity, diabetes, heart disease and general unhealthiness is our food supply and eating habits, then the solution is a simple one.
Let us return to growing our own food, or at least knowing who does, hopefully nearby, and preparing it the old-fashioned way, from scratch.
Of course, the first thing we think is that we don't have the time or money to really pursue a healthy eating lifestyle. Which is, of course, ridiculous! This is our health, our life, we're talking about. The solution is to find the time and save the money to do what is necessary to start eating healthy again.
If you're overweight, you have the added duty to cut down on the size of the portions you prepare and eat, but I've always found that homemade food from scratch is much more fulfilling and satisfying. That part of healthy eating is easy, even for those of us who simply love homemade food, and who doesn't?
