Healthy Living doesn't mean you can't have Fun,

nor does healthy living mean you can't enjoy your food and life. Instead, let's try to think of it as learning to avoid negativity in both our diet and our lifestyle. Recent studies have shown that people who are happy are healthy, and people who are very stressed are neither happy or healthy.

One of my goals with Weight Loss thru Healthy Living is to help people understand that life should be filled with daily joy and happiness, no matter what your body size. If you're trying to lose weight, do it in a matter that is enjoyable and life-affirming, and it will become easier. Then, when you've reached the weight you desire, you'll find healthy living and healthy eating becomes second nature to you. That's how you keep the weight off, improving your self-image and reducing your stress.

Stress Release

My motivation for writing this particular page about healthy living was based on an article I read stating that one of the reasons for obesity in adults is a high stress lifestyle. This was a suprise to me, since I thought that most high stress people were underweight due to constant nervous tension in their bodies.

Look! If you're in a high stress job, and you love it, well, there isn't much I can say to help you, 'cause you're addicted. If you do want to reduce your stress, especially if you need or want to lose weight as well, there are some very specific changes you can make to your lifestyle that will help you almost immediately.

First, as you've heard me say before, stop eating fast food. New research shows that the chemicals in fast food actually increase anxiety and stress. For breakfast, try an all-natural fruit smoothie mixed in your blender with natural ingredients for a quick boost as you rush out the door. If you have time for a bowl of oatmeal, or some healthy, all-natural eggs and a granola bar, that works, too. The point is to stop ingesting those harmful chemicals and hormones into your body, and replace them with natural, preferably plant-based foods.

At Lunch, try bringing along some fresh fruit, or an organic salad with some grilled chicken strips, or both, if you have a physically demanding job. Healthy living doesn't require nearly as much expense as it does time and forethought. To avoid fast food, you must plan ahead. A week ahead at the grocery store is a big help. By the way, the healthy stuff at the grocery store is always hardest to find, so ask where the health food section is at your grocer's. Also, spend more time and money in the produce section, and your weightloss efforts, as well as your health, will thank you for it. Aim for organically grow produce. It's not perfect, but it's so much better for your body and our environment. In Texas, where I'm currently domiciled, Kroger's is far and away the best for both healthy living sections, (even though it's on the back wall!), and reduced prices.

In the Midwest, where I've spent most of my life, Hy-Vee grocery stores are ahead of the curve, and go out of their way to promote healthy living. A few months ago, they sponsored a Ladies Night Out in Des Moines, with all sorts of free food and trials of new products. I was privileged to participate in this event, and hope to do more of them in the future. Hy-Vee is a well-respected name, and one of my favorites.

Eating Healthy at Dinner

This is really a whole other page, but briefly, the basic points to remember: Reduce your portion size. Your meat dish, if necessary, should be no larger than your fist. Fish whenever possible.

Focus on plants. Fruit, vegetables, salads, beans.

The more color, the better. Variety is the spice of life!

Cook from scratch, using farm fresh produce when possible. If you have a farmer's market, make an effort to use foods from there when you can.

Whenever possible, dine with friends and family. Nothing reduces stress like a home-cooked meal enjoyed with people you love. Many studies have proven that people who have even a few close personal relationships are happier and healthier than those who do not. Cultivate friends, and enjoy their company.

Try drinking Water as the only beverage at the table a few days each week.

The reason for this page is to remind you that living healthy, eating healthy, and reducing stress are keys to a happy, fulfilled life. We want to enjoy our lives, knowing that we're living as well as we can in spite of whatever adversity life throws at us. Live Healthy and enjoy!
