Being Overweight Isn't your Problem,
but being overweight may be causing your health problems. Like any problem, it can be solved. Nobody's helpless, and sometimes just a little effort can have huge returns. Our goal here at
Weight Loss thru Healthy Living
is to get you to stop thinking about your weight problem, and start thinking about your food and your health. You do know that they're related, right? So many of us spend our time working so hard to stay ahead in our careers and finances that we don't always think about how we should be eating. Statistics show that over half of Americans are overweight, and one in four is obese, or on the verge of obesity. It's not because we're lazy, as we work more hours per week than any other civilized country. The problem all comes down to our food and our eating habits.
When was the last time you ate a cooked-at-home-from-scratch meal? Makes you sad just to think about it doesn't it? If I think back to my childhood, some of my happiest and most important times were around the table with family and friends, yet, my children, who are grown, had not nearly as many of those times as I did. (My fault, of course!) So, my first little bit of advice about controlling your weight would be to eat at home a little more often. So many studies have shown that meals made from scratch are so much healthier, and, when shared at home with loved ones, are more likely to have a pleasant effect on your heart and health.
Now, lest you think that eating at home is too much work, let me remind you of the benefits, and also of the cost. In a January 22, 2008 article in "Circulation" magazine, a long term study indicated that a diet high in fast-foods like hamburgers, hot dogs, red and processed meats had a 26% higher rate of heart disease than those who ate a whole food diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, and low fat dairy products.
This will come as no surprise to those who visit here often, as we have pages on
fruits and vegetables,
Mediterranean Diets,
which, by the way, is great for overweight people who are looking for a healthy alternative that is filled with flavor and variety. We even have pages on
diabetes
and a great page on
Cholesterol,
since that same study reported that people with low good cholesterol and high bad cholesterol were also more likely to develop heart disease. So, please, visit these other pages on our web site, and check back often to see what new items we've come up with to help you with your weight loss goals. You don't have to be overweight forever, and it's really not that painful, especially if you learn to shop right, cook from scratch at home, and cut down on your portion sizes.
