Weight Loss Myths Abound
So Let's Dive Into What's True, What's False, and What You Need to Know to Lose Weight

Weight Loss myths and the accompanying stories and fabrications abound, and the goal of this page, and indeed of the Weight Loss thru Healthy Living Website, is to educate, inform, and, we hope, to entertain you along our journey to optimal weight. To start with, losing weight means different things to different people. To an athlete, like a boxer, it may mean getting to a lower fighting weight. To an elderly person, it may mean reducing the risk for heart health and circulation problems. To most of us, though, it means getting rid of excess fat in our bodies.

This ranges anywhere from 5 to 150 pounds. It's your body, and your weight should reflect your comfort range. Please do not presume that what somebody else weighs or looks like is the way you should want to look.

This is a big myth in American Society: We should all be as attractive as movie stars. I submit that most of them are gorgeous and pleasant to look at. However, they are the exception, and what they're good at, (looking good, reading, and acting!) is not where most of us spend our efforts, nor should it be. Focus on being the best YOU can be, and then be satisfied when you're on your way. You can get more of this on our Motivation page. Next, let's define the word DIET. When used in this website, we're mostly referring to the way we eat, not a specific eating plan. For instance, does your diet consist of mostly fast food, or are you engaged in a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables, and plant based whole foods? Let's start to think of diet and weight loss as choices we make, instead of things we dread to think about.

While we're on the subject, which we always are, of course, let's talk about Whole Foods. We're not talking about the two all beef patties and all the stuff in between the sesame seed buns! Or even the "I can't believe I ate the whole thing" pizza. On this website, we're talking about mostly plant based foods, grown naturally whenever you can get them that way.

This excludes pre-prepared meals wherever they come from. It also excludes quick fix meals in a box or bag. Most of these things have so many fillers, preservatives, salt, and artificial flavorings in them that you can gain weight and get sick just picking up the boxes. Whole foods are those things that you buy fresh and eat raw, like tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, baby carrots, nuts, oranges, apples, grapefruits, cantaloupe, broccoli, celery, etc.

By the way, how many of these just mentioned items have you had today? This week? This month? How does this affect your weight loss efforts, you ask? Simply. Thanks for asking...

Not so long ago, we were an agrarian society, eating what we grew on our own land, or trading with our neighbors back and forth, and eating almost all freshly grown or raised food and animals. Then the industrial revolution moves us into the city where this is no longer practical, and we start getting our food from a grocery store, and most recently from fast food restaurants. This is not so bad, but, like most things American, we take it to extremes, many of us eating more meals away than we eat at home. I am constantly amazed at how many overweight people tell me they don't eat more than one or two meals at home per week. You don't need me to tell you how much fat is in most fast food meals. You already know how bad they are for you.

But what about that food you pick up in the store, and cook yourself? Well, it depends. Are you reading the labels? Do you know what to look for when you do? Here is the key I'd like you to take away- just pay attention! If you read a label and don't recognize most of the things on it-put it back and move on. If you buy whole foods, cook them with your health in mind, and use moderation, you'll find yourself losing weight, feeling better, and looking better. While we're on the subject, please check out my new page on our food supply here. I'll think you'll be surprised, as I was, by what you learn on this page. One thing I am certain of, you won't feel nearly so guilty about your past weight loss failures after reading it! It should also help you understand some of why past weight loss efforts haven't been as successful as you might have liked. That whole page is based on a book I highly recommend, which you'll find described there. While we're on the subject of organic food and healthy eating, check out this site on the subject, I think you're going to love it!
